Ownership is key to your business as an author

Direct-to-reader sales is the future of publishing.  Just ask J. K. Rowling and her sales platform at Pottermore.com.  My mobile ePub3 creator studio, sales, and marketing online platform, the Embellisher ™ 3.0, is efficient, secure, and reader-friendly.  These are the main reasons four of my clients have enjoyed using it for their different purposes.  I will also cover how my system is more secure than other platforms, and why it will be the wave of the future for selling to a readership which has switched from eBook Readers and computers, to reading on their mobile devices.  Why?  Because the reader of today is “mobile and on the move,” and sales and marketing directly to them through their iPhone and Android are the best ways to allow them to read and even do educational exercises, across mobile devices.

The Attorney

                                             Patrick Gould, Esq.

Our client, Patrick Gould, Esq., was very interested about working with somebody who could get him into the mobile publishing delivery of his law school bar review business.  When I met him at the Chicago Book Expo America, we had a good conversation about what he does and what he wanted to do.  I really appreciated Patrick’s approach to getting the best possible app for his needs.

First of all, Patrick hired a technical person to interview prospective app developers to see which one did exactly what he needed done for his needs.  After I talked with this person, Patrick was pleased with the information he got about us, and we moved into the specifics of his business needs.  Any good business person always knows the competition, and Patrick was no exception.  The other deliverers of bar training materials, including some multi-million dollar outfits like Kaplan, had some very poor ratings for their apps.  Most of the problems had to do with the syncing problem and the video loading problems inside the apps.

Therefore, I explained to Patrick that this was an excellent time for him to move into the market with the best app to deliver his materials to the students in the best way possible.  Social marketing is vital to the life of a business predicated upon technology and the delivery of educational content.  I told Patrick that his new business app would not have a problem with the syncing of materials to the user’s mobile device because our app doesn’t allow local access of files.  The user must be connected to the Internet to use the Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing app.  This provides the user with instant syncing with the educational materials, and, most importantly, the materials cannot be stolen.

Our product is not strictly an app; it is a so-called “web app”. In other words, users do not install the app from a Playstore but instead visit a website which is optimized for mobile phone usage.  The user must be logged into the app and connected to the Internet in order to be able to use the materials.  The video problems are alleviated with our app by installing the videos on Vimeo and then embedding the video inside an eBook using our ePub3 Creator Studio.  Whenever the video is uploaded into the app, it will have a problem with loading when the user tries to view the video.  Because we “stream” the video from Vimeo’s server, there is no loading needed.  Also, we don’t use YouTube because of the advertisements that get placed inside the videos and interrupt the viewing enjoyment.  Hackers do this to increase revenue, but we don’t want our users being side-tracked by some other company’s ads.

Patrick purchased our Turnkey Installationt the Embellisher 3.0.  He also needed a Php-enabled website, so we sold him that also, with the domain name of GouldBarReview.com included, for $100.00.  The security our platform provides was also important for his legal tests.  My main competition are online sites such as the Canadian service Bookchain.  If you note, they do charge license fees and other fees, simply under the guise of “protecting your eBook from piracy.”  My developer tells me the only “almost” foolproof way to protect an eBook is by not having the complete book anywhere in the sales software, which my platform does and Bookchain does not.  My platform also allows for ePub3 formatted eBooks (multimedia and interactive).

My developer and I worked on this program for several years to ensure an almost 99% hack-proof program (he says that nothing digitally programmed is ever 100% hack-proof, so I must agree).  However, the idea is to slow-down the hacker enough that he/she doesn’t believe it’s worth his/her time to pursue the required stealth.  For example, eBooks sold on Amazon include the “keys to the car” inside each book they sell.  A hacker can de-program the book in about twenty seconds and have it up for sale on pirate web sites.

The reason my program is so efficient is because the reader must login to a “live” app which never loads a complete copy of the eBook into the eReader portion of the software.  To pirate a book, the hacker must be able to download a complete copy, and in my Embellisher platform, this is not possible.

Finally, we worked with Patrick to show him how to use his new app and the creator studio that comes with it.  We set-up a one-on-one webinar to show him the steps required to create a simple ePub3 eBook, embed a video, and include other teaching materials for his students.  In addition, we instructed him on the use of the Administrative side of the app where he can price his courses and even include coupon discounts.  Finally, we explained to him that because he has licensed our top-of-the-line installation, he will be able to expand his business in the future by allowing other instructors to have their own courses to sell inside his app.  In other words, each instructor can have his/her own Administrator login and creator studio account, and Patrick can collect a fee from the instructor for using it.  In other words, only the Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing platform allows for expanding into the publishing and education business.  In fact, entire school districts use our app to do this, allowing each teacher to have his/her own Administration account.

The Publisher

         Yaron Goldstein

When I began working with the largest eBook distributor in Israel, Yaron Goldstein, one of the first things he told me was that the Israeli publishing community had never experienced the phenomenon of Amazon and eBooks.  In other words, there was no rise of the giant conglomerate to attempt the take-over of the digital reading market the way it had happened in the United States.  Mr. Goldstein put it rather simply to me, however, when he said, “Why should I give 30% of my money to Amazon?”  Why, indeed!

There was a lot made about the “Netflix for books” business model.  Perhaps Smashwords spoke most coherently about it.  Of course, they had signed a deal with Oyster, one of the outfits that offers the “all you can read buffet.”  Hugh Howey, the former indie supporter came out in favor of the Amazon Kindle Unlimited experience for the reader and author.  Of course, he was one of the “lucky ones” to receive a “non-exclusive” contract agreement to sell his titles through Amazon.  Even the Huffington Post came out with the article to assess the overall playing field for the author in these days of “streaming content.”

Yaron and I are working together to provide a better model for authors.  Our model says that mobile publishing is the only way indies can stay competitive against this tidal wave of greedy profiteers in the “land of the corporate giants.”  Make no mistake.  The authors are the ones losing out in the long run with the corporate business model.  It’s basic economics.  Karl Marx even talks about it in Das Capital.  If the business person (yes, an author is also a business person) does not own the means of production, then he will always remain subservient to the overlord.  What is never discussed in these articles about Safari, Oyster, Scribd, Kindle Unlimited and Playster, is the fact that they own the means of production.  In other words, without the ability to create and distribute your own intellectual property, independent authors will remain patsies to the Goliaths in this world.

My company, EMRE Publishing, LLC and its product, the Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing and Marketing platform 3.0, is the David who can fight this Goliath.  Our slingshot is what will give our clients the edge.  Mobile distribution of books allows authors to become the controllers of their destinies.  No other means of getting your books in front of readers’ eyes will allow you to collect most of the profits directly into your bank account the way our platform does.  This is the main reason Yaron came on board, and this is why we’re willing to work with any independent who wants to experience the freedom of getting their “ducks in a row” in order to establish a brand that won’t be taken under by the conglomerate model of book sales looming on the horizon.

The Author

                                            Shirley Franks

Shirley Franks has purchased our installation of the Embellisher™ Mobile Publishing platform 3.0 to use her expertise as a nurse and business person.  She wanted to be able to prepare and teach graduate nurses the practical skills they need to pass the Nurse Practicum, which is a final and required test by one’s peers to see if you have the practical skills necessary to work with patients.

As a result, we created her website and landing page to introduce her clientele to her services.  This was an extra cost because she did not have her own server or website.  We were able to do this with no problems.  All registrants will automatically receive a free copy of Shirley’s eBook, A Foreign Nurse’s Guide to America, when they register for her free app.  The courses will be offered inside the app.  Students can login to their course on any mobile phone available, just copy the platform URL to their home screen, so there are no complicated management interfaces.  They can also pay for their courses right inside the app using Stripe.

As you can see, our installation works for authors who have something to teach their readers.  Not only can you sell your books inside our app, you have established a unique, one-on-one platform from which to teach them the specialized information you may possess.

The Former eBay Businessman

                                             Chris Musgrave

I hope you don’t mind the bit of nepotism, but my son, Chris Musgrave, uses my platform for his growing online product sales.  He was tired of the “buyer bots” and extra charges that Amazon was piling on.  So, the way he profits is to create the multimedia eBooks in the studio part of the software, and he then markets the eBook for each of his products and adds extras like videos and interactive text inside that can bring-up images to show the quality of the item being sold to each prospective buyer.  He prefers to market in a mobile environment because it allows him to send links to each product by using Twitter, Snapchat, Linkedin, Skype, or any other social platform, where he can reach high-end collectors and quality product buyers.  Once they sign-up to his platform, he has future sales guaranteed.

He is now a consultant to the pawn shop in Rosemead.  Brown’s Pawn and Jewelry.  He is married to Kristal Kent and they have my granddaughter, Jenna Nicole, who wants to be a genetic research scientist when she finished college.  She’s the real “star” of our family.

As a fellow author, I understand the hard work that goes into each manuscript, and when you create a series of books in one genre or subject area, you want to be able to keep your readers in one place—your place.  Ownership and security, I say again, are the keys to any thriving business.  Especially the digital eBook business.

New Publishing Paradigm at EMRE Publishing

New Publishing Paradigm at EMRE: WAR STORIES ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

Enhanced War Stories

Readers and artists will be able to get together by supporting the new method of publication at EMRE Publishing, LLC in San Diego.  Raising funds for its first digital and print anthology, the supporters will be able to help the authors protect their intellectual property and create a new way of enjoying enhanced creative material.

The topic of the first anthology is war.  The title of the anthology is WAR STORIES ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. The method of the artistry will be to create stories that have an element of speculation in each one.  Therefore, they will categorized as fiction, although we will be soliciting stories by authors who have experienced war, whether while in the military or as a civilian living in a war-torn country.  These stories can be in the genres of Science Fiction, Adventure, Mystery, Alternate History, and Fantasy.

Each anthology will be separately financed by raising funds at Indiegogo, so we hope you can join us in this bold new experiment in publishing.

Never Be Ripped-Off By Middlemen Again

I Want to Be Like J. K.

How does a billionaire author sell her digital and audio books?  J. K. Rowling, a pretty smart creator of the legendary Harry Potter series, never sold her digital or audio rights to any mainstream publisher.  That’s right, folks, she’s now doing it all on her own at pottermore.com!

Now you can be one step ahead of J. K. Rowling.  Why?  Because even though she’s selling direct to the reader, and she owns 100% of the digital and audio rights to her property, she’s still allowing the buyers to download her eBooks in the extremely unsecure epub format.  ePub is the major reason why the major book publishers won’t allow libraries to lend their copies to a library patron.

Also, at the recent London Book Fair, a complete presentation on eBook Piracy was given to demonstrate the fact that over $350 million were lost to pirates in a single year.  According to research by Dutch firm GfK, only 10% of all eBooks currently on e-readers, smartphones or tablets is actually paid for. Meanwhile a survey conducted by Book Industry Study Group found that during the Spring 2013 semester, 34% of college students in the United States illegally downloaded course materials from unauthorized websites.

The fact is, the minute you, the publisher/author allows the reader/buyer access to the complete eBook, it can be pirated.  The only way to keep one step ahead of the digital pirates is to make the DRM (Digital Rights Management) system the most secure it can be.

ePub3 in the Year 2017: Will Authors and Readers Enjoy Multimedia?

Mobile Publishing ePub3

Read what indie authors need to know for 2017.

As a publisher and independent author, I’ve established my company to serve fellow indie authors.  I’ve realized (mostly through trial and error) that the best way to publish and distribute an indie title is to do most of the preparation of my work (what publishers call “prepress”) on my own.  This saves you a hell of a lot of up-front costs so you’re free to put most of your money and effort where it counts:  marketing and promotion.

That being said, I also provide authors with https://emrepublishing.com/digital-prepress-services/ editing and prepress services, as well as eBook conversions https://emrepublishing.com/ebook-conversion-services/.  However, most of my business is all about getting the indie author’s titles out there in the hands of readers.  My three services are very reasonably priced, but it’s the way my services allow authors to market directly to their audience that sets my mobile publishing web app apart from the competition.  Instead of forcing my authors to do their publishing through me, as most of the big outfits do, I turn the keys of publishing over to the indie author.  In other words, they get installed on their server my Embellisher mobile publishing system https://emrepublishing.com/downloads/standard-embellisher-tm-mobile-publishing-platform/ (5 years in the making; based on the innovative ePub3 code of the Readium Project) for only $40 (1 year license, $10 for each year thereafter).  This is the best direct marketing tool for indie authors because you can harvest email addresses of your ePub3 eReader installers, and also publish your stuff directly and instantly to them through their mobile device.  You can also use our creator studio https://emrepublishing.com/embellisher-ereader/ to do your development of eBook titles and the marketing of your eBooks (including sales with Stripe Payment Gateway included) directly to your reader.

This method is innovative in that no other system allows an independent author to work independently (on their own website) and to collect 100% of the hard-earned price they affix on their merchandise–their eBooks.  In my opinion, mobile publishing is the future of B2C (business to consumer) eBook publishing, and you can afford $40 to give it a shot, can’t you?  Our installation for the non-branded version of the Embellisher is a do-it-yourself package downloadable from my website after you pay.  If you want our developer to do the installation, it won’t cost you much.

Vearsa ePub3

My other two services are also aimed at indies who can’t get all the advantages of being with a publisher.  I was published by Harcourt-Brace Professional in the 1990s, and my experience with them made me want to become a publisher on my own.  Why?  Besides the fact that I lost out on a ton of royalties, I wanted to put my own marketing touches into the effort and collect the 100% of the price of the book (that I thought I deserved, being the blatant capitalist that I was).  Thus, my second service https://emrepublishing.com/downloads/worldwide-ebook-distribution-vearsa/ is to offer my authors (for $50 each) a chance at distributing their eBooks for sale worldwide through Vearsa https://vearsa.com/.  This isn’t the BookBaby rip-off, where they promise that you’re being sold to 100 retailers, when in fact, if you were being sold through all the outlets they claim are being distributed to, the retailers would be refusing to offer your book for sale in their store, much less give you 86% royalty.  No.  My offer gives authors access to over 1,000 online stores around the world, over 65,000 libraries, and publishing privileges in over 100 countries.

The key is that I give my authors their own “imprint” under my publisher umbrella.  This is like some big publisher saying, “Hey, let me set you up, author, with your own private label and distribution network, and you can fix the price and you can collect most of the royalties (less the retailer’s cut).”  My authors punch in their metadata on the form I give them (a crucial part of eBook marketing!), affix their ISBN, and upload their copy to my Dropbox.  I then upload your metadata form and copy of your eBook (in .pdf, .epub, .epub3, and .mobi) to the Vearsa website, and you get all the advantages of having multiple listing genres (not possible for indie authors on their own–as wise indie authors know from working with places like Amazon KDP), and they can also do eBook sales, targeting of certain book stores (and countries) because I will give them an analytics reading they can use to these kinds of marketing adventures.

The third service I offer is to provide print-on-demand services https://emrepublishing.com/downloads/embellisher-diy-installation-print-demand-sales-option/ through Amazon’s Createspace.  They establish an account there, and I can do all the “heavy lifting” if needed (editing, interior layout, cover design).  However, since most of my authors are professionals, they have already had their work edited and designed, and all they need is some help getting it uploaded properly so they can collect from their marketing of the POD through their Embellisher platform.  I also provide in this package an epub copy of an “Author Tour and Book Launch Template” that can be used inside the Embellisher to do pre-publication marketing to stir-up business directly with your readers.  Without prepress or editing services, this will cost only $55.

So, if you’re ready to do the real work of getting your titles read and purchased by your readers, then you might consider my options.  Why shouldn’t you sell directly to your audience and collect 100% of the royalties?  Don’t you deserve it?

In point of fact, you can now establish a free account https://emrepublishing.com/creator/ inside our ePub3 Creator Studio, and see how it all works from the eBook developer’s angle.  It is my contention that once we have quality ePub3 books out there for our readers to “experience” then their popularity will increase exponentially.  This is especially true for books in the non-fiction arena.  Leadership, education and self-help genres can most benefit from ePub3 formatting.  eBooks now have to contend with augmented and virtual reality technology.  In fact, you can insert VR videos inside your work in our ePub3 Creator Studio.

The tools I would like eBook creators to “play with” are the “insert story” https://vimeo.com/188600846 and other interactive components.  This tool and others are available in the enhanced version of our ePub3 Creator Studio for $40 https://emrepublishing.com/downloads/standard-embellisher-tm-mobile-publishing-platform/.  Our studio even allows a developer to include Javascript, which is the heart of interactivity in the world of eBooks.  In fact, besides our eReader (based on the Readium Project’s eReader) only the Gideon eReader and iPads can view ePub3 eBooks using javascript.  Any content developer will tell you that unless you have javascript, you can’t do the cool things inside your digital book such as forms, pop-ups, animations, and other interactive elements http://ebookarchitects.com/learn-about-ebooks/enhanced-ebooks/.

I would, in fact, suggest that you plan your ePub3 formatted eBook very carefully.  We can provide you with an ePub3 (or standard eBook) designer https://emrepublishing.com/ebook-conversion-services/.  You really need somebody who can work with you to implement the features you want to include inside your innovative publication http://digitalpublishing101.com/digital-publishing-101/production/hiring-ebook-designers/.  I, of course, don’t care if you hire somebody on your own, and you can do that if you talk to the folks who belong to the Readium Project.

As a creator myself, what I’m most concerned with is the fact that non-technical but highly creative folks can see their visions come alive by working with a competent developer.  I worked with my developer for five years in order to create the code for the Embellisher.  We suggest that you can best implement your creativity by partnering with an ePub3 coder who can maximize your ideas on the page for the reader.

Virtual Reality (VR) Technology Coming Soon to the Embellisher (TM) Publishing and Training Platform

vr

Only the Open Source EMRE Publishing Platform Allows for Seamless Integration of VR

After speaking with my lead developer, Bas Van Stein, we will be doing a webinar on the addition of Virtual Reality programming in our ePub3 Creator Studio.  The positive implications for publishers and educators in the private and public sectors are obvious.  Whether our clients develop materials on their own or hire us to create these eBooks for them, the amazing possibilities are there for both publishing and training/education.

The reason we can quickly integrate the VR technology into our platform is because our system was developed from open source code.  That means that the new aframevr/aframe tool that uses JavaScript can be easily used in our platform to create awesome virtual reality effects.  All the user will need to experience such effects inside the eBook created in our studio, would be the conventional VR hardware headset.

Since all the other ePub3 delivery platforms, including Apple and Amazon, don’t allow for the use of JavaScript inside the publications created inside their ePub studios, we at EMRE will have the only eBook Creator Studio that can add Virtual Reality seamlessly into eBooks.  Look at these samples of some of the effects which can be added to your eBook using the aframevr/aframe tool.

We Will Be Presenting our System at a Webinar for the USDLA and OLC

We will be rolling out the possibilities for utilizing VR technology inside ePub3 eBooks at a webinar through the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA), of which we are a member, and the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), as a co-sponsor.  Please contact us if you’d like to attend these webinars, and we’ll forward information to you.

Toffler is Dead, but Future Shock Still Exists

Alvin-Toffler-Quotes-New-Years-Resolutions-2015-Small-Business-Tips-Internet-Marketing

If Toffler Had Lived, He Would Have Written About the Fourth Wave

After the announcement came last week that author and futurist Alvin Toffler had died, I immediately thought about another expert I knew during my years teaching at the California Institute of Technology.  Dr. Peter Drucker held many conferences for top management at Caltech’s Industrial Relations Center, and I knew him personally.  He told me to read Toffler’s book because it gave an excellent insight into what was happening in the world of technological change.  Drucker, of course, was the genius management thinker who coined the term “knowledge worker” and was very adamant about society’s need to change quickly to meet the new demands of technological progress.

In his landmark book, Future Shock, Mr. Toffler startled the world by showing how the “new literacy” would be defined by how well a human can learn, unlearn and relearn a variety of skills.  This was certainly required in a new culture that used digital technology.  Unless we can keep up with the constant changes, businesses and individuals will fall by the wayside, never to be heard from again.

I believe the next or “Fourth Wave” of technology will be turning manufacturing and publishing over to the individual.  Just imagine creating a product in your home, getting it “printed” by computer printer, and having your customers pay you directly online or through their mobile devices.  Or, as in the publishing game (my business), imagine the individual creating his or her own publication that can be instantly marketed, sold, and read by mobile subscribers that can be constantly updated as to your next big project or book right through their mobile device.

In other words, the Fourth Wave of technology is creating the liberated business person, who can go it alone, and reap most of the profits alone.  Certainly, the big conglomerates will be screaming holy hell, but what the hell?  The technology is already in place, and it will only take the “newly intelligent” to take advantage of this development.  It’s already happening, by the way.  Self-employed businesses are the fastest growing industries in the world.

For example, here’s my pitch to a person who has an inspiration story he wanted to publish to brick-and-mortar bookstores.  You can hear how I explained to him that because of the changes in technology his best bet would be to publish and market via mobile device:

Thanks for your inquiry about publishing options at EMRE Publishing.

We are somewhat of an unconventional publisher, in that we turn the money-making options over to the author to reap the greatest profits from his/her title. As you may or may not be aware, the publishing industry is changing drastically. Self-publishers, like yourself, have been able to achieve brisk sales through outfits like Lulu and Smashwords. However, we take your publishing abilities one step further by allowing you to sell directly to your audience and establish a following that will brand you on their mobile devices as an inspirational author.

Social marketing is the new method of marketing that we use, and with our Embellisher (TM) Mobile Publishing and Marketing platform, you’ll be able to sell your title(s) in more formats (print, conventional eBook, and ePub3 multimedia). I believe it would be to your best profit-making benefit to leverage all the print possibilities and market these through a single platform. Why? Well, you collect 97% of the list price, and it goes directly into your bank account. We use the Stripe purchase system that’s built right into our platform. With Lulu, they probably took a slice of your percentage (usually around 30%).

In addition, you don’t have control over the users who inquire about your book(s). In our Embellisher (TM) platform, you control the complete back-end or Admin side of things, which means you determine the price, you decide when and how you want to market, and you gain followers that can be marketed to again and again for any future titles (or online educational courses) you may have. Our direct social marketing method is the safest way for you to sell your books (especially your eBooks) because of the over three billion dollars a year that publishers are losing to eBook piracy.

As a former Caltech professor, and author, I wanted to be able to sell directly to my readers without getting ripped-off by pirates. That’s how and why the Embellisher (TM) platform was born. Frankly, getting your book into brick-and-mortar stores is a political process these days. You need to be with a publisher who’s willing to pay a lot of money just to get your book on the shelf, and to get it featured means you have to pay even more. Why not collect your profits directly from your reader and keep them with you for life? Especially with a heart-warming story like you have, people will want to have an app they can install that features you, and whenever they want to see what you’re up to, they just have to click on your app on their desktop in whichever mobile device they happen to have at hand.

Dr. Drucker and Alvin Toffler would be very gratified to see how technology is continuing to cause “tidal waves of change” in the business community.  We hope you can ride that wave to both profit and better communications.

Why Apps + eBooks = Money

traditional_b2c_model_1

Any enterprising person can critically think about how to publish a best-selling book and come up with some very basic premises about how it should be done:

  • The content of the book should be interesting to the specific audience.  Let’s face it, unless you write Gone with the Wind, you’re not going to be popular with all audiences.  Therefore, you should narrow your audience down to those who will be interested in your subject matter.  For example, if I write a book about investing in stock, then I must get an audience that appreciates how stocks are bought and sold and who have the money to gamble.
  • Since publishers are losing over three billion dollars to online pirates who steal content, I would want to sell my eBooks in a secure environment.  Although every eBook can be hacked, there are ways to reduce the numbers of hackers who would want to take the time and perform the exercise.  Just as a burglar usually doesn’t try to break into a locked home, so too does a hacker look for the easiest eBook he/she can exploit.
  • Even if you have content that is going to sell a million copies, the real money is made when you are able to build an audience that will diligently follow your series of books on whatever subject.  Guys like James Patterson and Hugh Howey (fiction authors from the commercial and indie sides of the business), have proven this can be done.
  • You want to have the tools to create, publish and market your eBooks so they stay in front of the audience for whom you have written.  Most people can Google the topic of eBook publication, and come up with great resources.

The missing factor in this scenario, as in most publishing efforts, is how much marketing expense, and how often do you need to spend that money to get your name and publications out there?  Do you want to shotgun your money to the major media?  Probably not, as it would defeat the very premise of having a limited or niche audience.  Do you want to use standard TV and print advertising?  Again, probably not, as you also are aware that people who read eBooks exist online and are digital fanatics.

b2c ecommerceTherefore, what if I told you that the best way to reach and keep your niche audience is to develop your eBook, market your eBook and sell your eBook, right from the same application platform?  My business was to create such a platform and my Embellisher™ is rolling out to the general publishing public at the May 11-13, 2016 Book Expo America.  As an independent author, who has won awards for his fiction, I wanted fellow authors to receive the best application to make money from their hard work.  I knew it wasn’t through Amazon or the fact that middlemen in the publishing world are presently reaping at least a 30% share of your book’s price just for placing it up on an international platform to be sold at the behest of increasingly confusing and uninteresting algorithmic roll of the dice.  I wanted my clients to be able to sell their books directly to their readers (what’s known as “business-to-consumer” or B2C model).  When I was the Management Development Supervisor at Caltech in Pasadena, I taught my students that the concept of Occam’s Razor was the best way to do business.  The fewer people you have to pay who are between you and your customer, the more money you will deposit into your bank account.  This holds true for selling eBooks, and I hope you can take a look at our website and see why I believe our method is a method with which you will want to spend time developing your next best-seller(s).

Amazon Keeps Selling New Kindles Despite Change of Readers’ Habits

Are the Clouds Darkening over Amazon?

darkclouds

Amazon recently unloaded a new version of their Kindle to the perhaps “less than eager” reading public.  With publishers losing over 3 billion dollars a year to eBook piracy, mostly due to the insecure Digital Rights Management of Amazon’s and other eBook retailer’s platforms, it makes you wonder how long publishers will keep selling their digital and print books through the giant online retailers.  But, most importantly, the reading public is changing their reading habits.  Each day, more and more readers are using whichever mobile device they have with them, so it makes having “extra” devices like the Kindle superfluous.

We at EMRE Publishing, LLC, believe the next generation of publisher and reader will be using mobile platforms to both create and consume all kinds of new eBooks, including the ePub3 formatted multimedia types and soon, the Virtual Reality books and games that will be coming down the pipe.  Why?  Mostly because of money, of course.  Publishers and consumers are getting tired of getting ripped-off while selling their eBooks and while reading their eBooks.  Let me break it down for you, lest you be unaware of the revolution taking place technologically.

  • Publishers have to pay Amazon to distribute their titles, but piracy and the 30% (minimum) fee charged by Amazon keeps eating into the profits of these publishers.
  • Consumers have to pay Amazon for the “privilege” of getting premium services like an “all you can read buffet” and free home delivery.
  • The so-called “direct communications with readers” is becoming less than adequate because of the large numbers of authors and readers involved, and the insistence of Amazon to not allow eBook giveaways on their Goodreads.com website.
  • The double-payments readers have to make when they buy or upgrade (see the new Oasis Kindle above) their Kindle eReader.  In addition, the inflexible (think proprietary) nature of their eReader software prevents .ePub3 titles from using all that they are truly capable of using.  For example, all Kindles cannot utilize any interactive or JavaScript interactive programming inside an eBook the way our Embellisher (TM) platform does.   Therefore, eBooks that have interactive content (think academic textbooks) cannot be used properly inside a Kindle.

Why the Revolution is Happening Now

Tarzan FrontIn summary, here’s why publishers and their reading public are switching to using mobile devices to publish and read in the coming generation:

  • Using an open-source publishing and reading app (like our Embellisher (TM), a publisher can create, market and communicate more directly with each niche consumer/reader.
  • Using our eReader platform, piracy is reduced to almost nothing, and we are now working on even creating an encryption system that will reduce any possible copying even more.
  • Keeping the reader in a single application allows the publisher to charge less for each title sold, and so nothing needs to be paid to a middleman distributor (like Amazon) if the publisher plays his cards right.  Marketing money can be better spent on directly reaching potential and current readers on their mobile devices rather than through the unwieldy algorithms and proprietary software of the Amazon Kindle (or the Apple, or the Nook, etc.).
  • A publisher in the next generation will literally be able to create, market, sell, collect and communicate directly with the reader using mobile technology, completely bypassing the rip-off experience of the Amazons of the world.

Publishers Lose Three Billion Dollars a Year from eBook Piracy

authors-against-ebook-piracy

The first question our publisher client from Israel had for us was whether or not our mobile sales platform, Embellisher™, protected his publishers’ eBooks from piracy.  In other words, was the Digital Rights Management (DRM) any good?  This was an interesting question because this publisher was one of the largest eBook sellers in Israel, and he explained that his country has never had to contend with the Amazons of the world.

“I created my own sales channels for my publishers because I had to.  We never had Amazon or Kindle, so we have always had to sell our eBooks directly to our customers.”  He was also well aware of the piracy problem in America.  Since he didn’t relish “giving away” at least 30% to a middleman (Amazon) and, to add insult to injury, lose even more money through piracy and other kinds of theft, he was really happy that our mobile sales platform had a system that was almost impossible to hack into.

In addition, we were able to work with him to be certain our ePub Creator Studio worked properly with the Hebrew language.  Our platform was developed specifically using open source (our basic platform was programmed using the open source Readium project).  In fact, he first read about our platform at Readium.org, and he was intrigued.

Now that we are breaking out into the wider market of the United States and Canada, we want to emphasize that all of your creation and sales should be kept inside your Embellisher™ app platform.  Why?  Here are five of the most important reasons:

  • You don’t have to pay these middlemen to have your eBooks sold.
  • Your DRM is one of the most secure you can get as long as you don’t sell outside our platform.
  • You can market directly to your readers through our mobile app, and you can also build your mailing lists categorized according to the author and genre inside the app.
  •  When you sell all your eBooks by mobile device, you can also open up your options to use our education platform in order to market courses based on your eBook content.
  • You must always remember that when you decide to sell through the less-secure portals like Amazon and all the others, you are opening yourself up to piracy.  We believe the rifle B2C business model will work the best for independents and self-publishers in the world of mobile reading.
