    When I worked with engineers at Caltech’s Industrial Relations Center, the challenges were immense when it came to communicating how these technical people could do the job for the marketing and sales people who had little to no technical knowledge.  The problem is that even though authors and creators can envision possible uses for technology (in this case, digital technology), the people who actually implement the code to bring about these “visions” have a vocabulary and genius all their own.  Therefore, most of my job at EMRE Publishing is to make certain my authors and publishers are able to work closely with my genius computer programmers to create the best possible rendering of their vision on the pages of their ePub3 books.     I like the metaphor that the late Alan Watts shared concerning reality.  On the surface, we can see the beauty of society in all its glory.  For example, a well written novel is like the top-side of an elaborate quilt;  it reads smoothly and doesn’t seem to make the experience of reading difficult.  However, if we turn this wonderful reality quilt over, we can see the underlying, seemingly chaotic reality that went into making this surface reality so beautiful.  We are therefore surprised to see a complex sequence of geometric patterns and trial and error sequences that go into making such a wonderful pattern on the top-side.  This is the world of creating an excellent eBook for the viewer.

    As a publisher and independent author, I’ve established my company to serve fellow indie authors.  I’ve realized (mostly through trial and error) that the best way to publish and distribute an indie title is to do most of the preparation of my work (what publishers call “prepress”) on my own.  This saves you a hell of a lot of up-front costs so you’re free to put most of your money and effort where it counts:  marketing and promotion.

    My other two services are also aimed at indies who can’t get all the advantages of being with a publisher.  I was published by Harcourt-Brace Professional in the 1990s, and my experience with them made me want to become a publisher on my own.  Why?  Besides the fact that I lost out on a ton of royalties, I wanted to put my own marketing touches into the effort and collect the 100% of the price of the book (that I thought I deserved, being the blatant capitalist that I was).  Thus, my second service https://emrepublishing.com/downloads/worldwide-ebook-distribution-vearsa/ is to offer my authors (for $50 each) a chance at distributing their eBooks for sale worldwide through Vearsa https://vearsa.com/.  This isn’t the BookBaby rip-off, where they promise that you’re being sold to 100 retailers, when in fact, if you were being sold through all the outlets they claim are being distributed to, the retailers would be refusing to offer your book for sale in their store, much less give you 86% royalty.  No.  My offer gives authors access to over 1,000 online stores around the world, over 65,000 libraries, and publishing privileges in over 100 countries.

    The key is that I give my authors their own “imprint” under my publisher umbrella.  This is like some big publisher saying, “Hey, let me set you up, author, with your own private label and distribution network, and you can fix the price and you can collect most of the royalties (less the retailer’s cut).”  My authors punch in their metadata on the form I give them (a crucial part of eBook marketing!), affix their ISBN, and upload their copy to my Dropbox.  I then upload your metadata form and copy of your eBook (in .pdf, .epub, .epub3, and .mobi) to the Vearsa website, and you get all the advantages of having multiple listing genres (not possible for indie authors on their own–as wise indie authors know from working with places like Amazon KDP), and they can also do eBook sales, targeting of certain book stores (and countries) because I will give them an analytics reading they can use to these kinds of marketing adventures.

    Toffler is Dead, but Future Shock Still Exists

    After the announcement came last week that author and futurist Alvin Toffler had died, I immediately thought about another expert I knew during my years teaching at the California Institute of Technology.  Dr. Peter Drucker held many conferences for top management at Caltech’s Industrial Relations Center, and I knew him personally.  He told me to read Toffler’s book because it gave an excellent insight into what was happening in the world of technological change.  Drucker, of course, was the genius management thinker who coined the term “knowledge worker” and was very adamant about society’s need to change quickly to meet the new demands of technological progress.

    In his landmark book, Future Shock, Mr. Toffler startled the world by showing how the “new literacy” would be defined by how well a human can learn, unlearn and relearn a variety of skills.  This was certainly required in a new culture that used digital technology.  Unless we can keep up with the constant changes, businesses and individuals will fall by the wayside, never to be heard from again.

    I believe the next or “Fourth Wave” of technology will be turning manufacturing and publishing over to the individual.  Just imagine creating a product in your home, getting it “printed” by computer printer, and having your customers pay you directly online or through their mobile devices.  Or, as in the publishing game (my business), imagine the individual creating his or her own publication that can be instantly marketed, sold, and read by mobile subscribers that can be constantly updated as to your next big project or book right through their mobile device.

    In other words, the Fourth Wave of technology is creating the liberated business person, who can go it alone, and reap most of the profits alone.  Certainly, the big conglomerates will be screaming holy hell, but what the hell?  The technology is already in place, and it will only take the “newly intelligent” to take advantage of this development.  It’s already happening, by the way.  Self-employed businesses are the fastest growing industries in the world.

    For example, here’s my pitch to a person who has an inspiration story he wanted to publish to brick-and-mortar bookstores.  You can hear how I explained to him that because of the changes in technology his best bet would be to publish and market via mobile device:

    BookShots Come Up Short

    I was interested in the new BookShot eBooks that popular novelist James Patterson was publishing.  My Detective Pat O’Malley Series was also predicated on the fact that readers don’t have the time to read long books, so none of my titles runs much over 40,000 words.  The American Library Association liked my idea so much they published all of my series titles as “highlighted” novels throughout the libraries of the United States.  In most word-counting systems, a novel today comes in at a minimum of 40,000 words, so I wanted my books to be on the lighter side.  Patterson is now coming out with an even shorter eBook, so I wanted to see what he had to offer.

    When Abby Hoffman said, “Steal this book,” back in the 1970s, there were no eBooks.  He meant that the reader should literally steal his paperback.  Flash-forward to 2016, and readers can steal eBooks with no trouble as long as publishers allow the DRM of an Amazon or an iBooks.  Anybody right now can do a search for “Cross Kill and torrents” and get a download of the complete BookShot.  This is why publishers are losing three billion dollars per year (and climbing).

    I developed my business because publishers and authors were getting ripped-off to the tune of three billion dollars per year with book piracy.  My eReader has an excellent Digital Rights Management system.   If publishers use my system, they can prevent eBook piracy.  However, if the book is poorly written, I can’t help them.  If one reads the negative comments on Amazon, one can see that the major disappointment of these readers is that fact that his BookShot title Cross Kill is not a complete story.  In other words, in his eagerness to lead the reader into the next serial, Patterson forgot that when a reader plunks down money (forget the piracy for a moment), he or she wants a complete drama with no “cliff-hangers.”

    I submit that unless and until publishers learn to create stories that can be total experiences for the reader, and still come in at less than 150 pages, they will not win at the BookShot game.  Also, unless and until publishers learn that good DRM helps the publisher and the author make money, then we will eventually not have to worry about the sales of these books being poor because readers will be getting them for free.

    Authors Wanted Better Digital Rights Management

    After I completed my recent article about eBook piracy and the fact that over three billion dollars a year are lost to eBook piracy, I wanted to add even more security to our platform before the May 11-13 BEA convention.  The result will be an extra layer of cryptography protection added to our already secure system.  When I was in the United States Navy, I understood the security value of cryptography because I was on the Top Secret Crypto Board at my command.  This has made me a virulent protector of my clients’ rights to publish using our B2B system.  As long as they don’t sell through Amazon or Apple, or other insecure retailer, they can be assured their eBooks will not be duplicated and resold (or read) by others.

    “To circumvent the security measurements you need to somehow de-minify and understand the JavaScript code, figure out the actual path to the ebook and then alter the JavaScript to fool the server to be able to view the eBook from another account. When you would browse directly to the epub (however, you already need to know the location), you can retrieve some of the epub source files, and if you have the knowledge to repack into epub format it would be possible to do that as well.  The advantage is that no encryption is needed, a huge disadvantage of the epub encryption is that the method to the encryption is always stored with the epub file; it is like delivering a locker with a key still attached…anyone that knows how to read epub source files and has access to the memory of the application (online or in app with root access) is able to crack them.”

    Amazon recently unloaded a new version of their Kindle to the perhaps “less than eager” reading public.  With publishers losing over 3 billion dollars a year to eBook piracy, mostly due to the insecure Digital Rights Management of Amazon’s and other eBook retailer’s platforms, it makes you wonder how long publishers will keep selling their digital and print books through the giant online retailers.  But, most importantly, the reading public is changing their reading habits.  Each day, more and more readers are using whichever mobile device they have with them, so it makes having “extra” devices like the Kindle superfluous.

    We at EMRE Publishing, LLC, believe the next generation of publisher and reader will be using mobile platforms to both create and consume all kinds of new eBooks, including the ePub3 formatted multimedia types and soon, the Virtual Reality books and games that will be coming down the pipe.  Why?  Mostly because of money, of course.  Publishers and consumers are getting tired of getting ripped-off while selling their eBooks and while reading their eBooks.  Let me break it down for you, lest you be unaware of the revolution taking place technologically.

    • Publishers have to pay Amazon to distribute their titles, but piracy and the 30% (minimum) fee charged by Amazon keeps eating into the profits of these publishers.
    • Consumers have to pay Amazon for the “privilege” of getting premium services like an “all you can read buffet” and free home delivery.
    • The so-called “direct communications with readers” is becoming less than adequate because of the large numbers of authors and readers involved, and the insistence of Amazon to not allow eBook giveaways on their Goodreads.com website.
    • The double-payments readers have to make when they buy or upgrade (see the new Oasis Kindle above) their Kindle eReader.  In addition, the inflexible (think proprietary) nature of their eReader software prevents .ePub3 titles from using all that they are truly capable of using.  For example, all Kindles cannot utilize any interactive or JavaScript interactive programming inside an eBook the way our Embellisher (TM) platform does.   Therefore, eBooks that have interactive content (think academic textbooks) cannot be used properly inside a Kindle.

    Why the Revolution is Happening Now

    Tarzan FrontIn summary, here’s why publishers and their reading public are switching to using mobile devices to publish and read in the coming generation:

    • Using an open-source publishing and reading app (like our Embellisher (TM), a publisher can create, market and communicate more directly with each niche consumer/reader.
    • Using our eReader platform, piracy is reduced to almost nothing, and we are now working on even creating an encryption system that will reduce any possible copying even more.
    • Keeping the reader in a single application allows the publisher to charge less for each title sold, and so nothing needs to be paid to a middleman distributor (like Amazon) if the publisher plays his cards right.  Marketing money can be better spent on directly reaching potential and current readers on their mobile devices rather than through the unwieldy algorithms and proprietary software of the Amazon Kindle (or the Apple, or the Nook, etc.).
    • A publisher in the next generation will literally be able to create, market, sell, collect and communicate directly with the reader using mobile technology, completely bypassing the rip-off experience of the Amazons of the world.
