Although it doesn’t capture most of the wit and dark humor of the novel, I recommend “White Noise” for its satirical look at academia and folks who “over think” everything.
I think David Foster Wallace would have enjoyed it immensely.
It’s much too absurdist and not politically correct for the “Academy.”
The dancing scene at the end in the supermarket is priceless, as well as DeLillo’s analogy to it being the Buddhist middle place into Death. LOL!
Adam Driver’s pot gut cracked me up.
The Academy can understand heavy-handed satire like “Parasite,” but this is way over their heads.
Also, the fact it was written during the Reagan years. I’m sure DeLillo knows we live what he was satirizing and then we cover it up. Cat box reality, I like to call it.
I wrote a recent story called Two Peas in a Pod set in 1969, and made Reagan and Nancy a kind of benign superstitious couple who believe in the paranormal, and Nancy controls Ron with astrology.
I also “time travel” Dr. Henry Jekyll and his “student” Edward Hyde to U. C. Berkeley during the People’s Park riots. LOL!
Have fun on “non-professional” drinkers’ night! LOL!
2023 should be a hum-dinger.
